Abstract

Urban India’s broadening university access has driven widespread dependence on student loans to fund higher education and professional degrees. This paper examines the practical impact of student debt on academic concentration and personal financial anxiety among undergraduates in Chennai. Although international studies often emphasize prolonged debt loads, local academic environments reveal specific regional balances between educational opportunity and fiscal control. To evaluate this trend, first-hand data were gathered through standardized surveys given to 120 college students across key academic centers in Chennai, including Guindy, OMR, Tambaram, and Egmore. The findings show that 64% of participants face moderate to intense worry over post-college debt schedules, directly shaping their professional paths and study habits. Notably, despite these concerns, 42% of students identify education loans as the main reason they could enroll in specialized degree tracks. At the same time, 35% focus heavily on landing early campus job offers specifically to minimize growing interest. These results demonstrate that student financing in Chennai operates as a two-sided mechanism serving as a vital tool for upward mobility while simultaneously creating mental and monetary strain. Consequently, these field observations indicate that lenders and educational leaders should introduce combined financial advisement systems along with adaptable repayment grace periods to protect student health.
